can Aragonite be as a substrate for the big freshies such as arows, oscars, devils, bichirs, etc,? it does keep the pH stable if with a heavy bioload, and its has a number of times more surface are than gravel or sand, But supposedly its only good for africans and saltwater.

Aragonite does help keep pH stable. But, that pH is in the 7.5 to 8.3 range. Your bichirs would be OK with it but, the rest prefer neutral to acidic conditions.

Yeah if your fish are already thriving in a alkaline PH then just go for aragonite.
Better yet, slowly add crushed corals.. The make good PH buffers.
