im currently doing my dig for a pond to house at most 2 arapaimas and maybe some silver aros. as of now the plan is 45ft x 15ft. im just wondering what is the minimum dept you can do to house one of these giants?

you could just keep it in a 10gallon lol i would say go as deep as you can.. prob atleast 4 or 5 feet mabye more if you wanted...i think its really up to you...i would say a min of 3 tho

i dont think i can go as deep as 5 feet so probably 3ft at most. i live at Richmond BC and at times we're bellow sea level so i dont think its a good idea to dig up that much on the actual foundation.

you wont be able to house these guys outside year round you know

i think your worrying about the temp regulation. well the plan was the pond would be built inside a green house kinda thing to regulate the temperature. the actual Green house would then be connected to the house so the actual abient temp would be regualted by the house themo but portable heater can always be rolled into the green house if needed. in a way im building an extention of my house but in glass something like how an indoor pool would be that has sky lights or glass roofing. water heating would be a total different story. as of now the plan is using a pool heater which hopfully would keep them water temp constant. i was also thinking that during winter all the glass would be covered by tarp or tent typ so the heat dont escape through the glass by condensation.

im sure 3feet would be fine i was goin for the bigger the better aproach...finally someone that will have a tank actually big enough to house these monsters...the greenhouse idea seams very kool keep us updated if you have time and dont mind typing this would be a great articale since its such a big pond and how its bein built inside somethin...cant wait for pics/updates hope all goes well
goodluck:thumbsup:

leave the glass uncovered. that is why greenhouses work in the winter. because the glass actually produces heat..

really... well thanks for the tip man. it just seems so cold under the sky light during the winter thats why i thought it would help. but ow well...

did i mention diggin sucks... im not even half way done lol. this is one of those days i wish i had a backhoe

just cover it up at night thats when you will have massive heat loss but if the sun is bright and not covered with clouds then it will warm up the green house ut you are gonna still have heat loss unless you have insulated glass

i havnt planned out how to do the covering part yet. insulated glass would be a wicked idea but arent those things pricy? where can you get those insulated glass anwyays?
