Wait for it to be about 7 feet long. If it builds a nest, it's a male. Males build nests and try to attract the females. Other than that, you'd need to run a blood test. There is no known external differences between male and female.

Hmmm will just have to get a few more on the off chance I get a pair...went to an aquarium shop owned by some Vietnamese characters in Vientiane and came home with a silver arowana, two alligator gar fish and the Arapaima for $30, fortunately I own a small construction company and live in the tropic so it looks like it is going to be;

!. Out with the excavator...
2. Dig big hole;
3. Fill with water next wet season;
4. Add this lot and whatever other interesting things I can find at the market here (I bought a 30 cm Goonch for $1 last week) and one of those giant 4 M stingrays would be cool!
5. Erect strong fence to keep out the locals in case one of them gets eaten,

Does anyone have any suggestions about the type of pond bottom I should create...

BTW thanks for the responses
