before you mention the name Arapaima ///talk to me about the size of your tank

You don't got to be so rude. He's asking a question not even related to the tank. If you've got nothing, don't reply yea.

You gotta' wait for someone with a gigas to reply. I'd like to know too.

I do not see the least bit of rudness in my reply /// just a suggestion, after all people have the right to frame their thoughts according to the provided feed back
Chill Chessetian,, I am not like that ///
P S I do own a Pima

In the U S A arapaimas are illegal in certain States,,the fish is relatively cheap ,the only handicap is to have a mega tank at your disposal, once you got that down, you are home free. not very choosy when it comes to foods although i would strongly suggest crusteceans as part of the diet for the brilliance of the red in about 1/3of the fish body from the tail and even on some distant scales depending on the gene ///pEACE

Thanks christian.. :) i didnt take any offence there quovadis.. i do understand its a huge responsibility.. i was jus wondering about the initial things i need to be prepared for.. i'm not too sure about anything in india he he he :grinno: a lot of red tape, bribes blah blah and the works.. at this rate i could bring in a pima into the country saying its a gold fish.. but again say being totally legal are there any documents that i should keep with me before i own a pima.. and about the tank.. i doubt if i will really keep a pima.. but ya i have this huge pond in my farm.. somethin the size of a swimming pool :)

Arapaima are CITES appendix II, which means you need a permit to move them across international borders. The permits are usually issued for groups of fish, not single ones. The "burden of proof" is on the importer, so if you bring it in yourself you need the paperwork. If you buy it off someone who has brought it in, then you don't.

Thank you. That jus makes it crystal clear. cheers.

No prob. There are relatively few CITES listed aquarium fish. Seashorses, Asian arowanas come to mind. Asian aros are CITES I normally (which means no trade), but II if they are farmed (so you need to have paperwork to prove it).

Hi Kaya,

There are a couple of shops in Bombay which currently stock dozens of Arapaima (from sizes ranging from 7" to 18").

As mentioned above, if you are buying these within the country, you don't need any paperwork.

Let me know if you need the details for the shops.

Cheers,

Sid

PS: Prankur (Joergemathew) from Bhopal bought an Arapaima from Bombay a few months back. You can also ping him for any details.
