Arapaimas- what's with the Holes in their head

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
were not so sure about that hole too....but must be just how they are characterized as a ancient creature from ages ago....like a living breathing fossil.Must connect to its inner brain or head cannals where its actual brain makes these stuff inside of it move like ours

Are arapaimas arowanas?

No. Arapaima are their own genius and species. They are closely related to arowana- both are boney tongue fish.

The "holes" in there head serve two purposes. First and foremost they are sensory points for detecting movement in the water. Second, males secrete a 'milk' from glands that are used to sustain the fry when they are still in the nest area.
