I know there's one kind you can keep in fresh its whole life but I'm not sure which kind.

I think those do better in groups. I am far from an expert though so don't quote me on it

Cool bro thanks for your post the Archer I got is a regular one!

Actually can anybody tell which one it is?

Toxotes chatareus looks like thats the one that can get 16 inches and is in that photo!

Looks like I have Toxotes jaculatrix that can get 12 inches!

Nice fish! These guys are too cool! :D

Moved to Other Monster Fish; archers aren't characins.

As far as I know they hunt as a group when young to increase the chance of hitting prey when they spit but once they get older they move onto a singular life. I've seen many archer fish kept in fresh water, I cant remember the exact species of the fish I saw. I fairly sure Toxotes jaculatrix are the most common species in the aquarium trade.

I believe the only strickly FW Toxotes species is the T. blythii (clouded archerfish, if I´m not mistaken with the English name). T. microlepis is also mentioned as tolerating FW their whole life, although in nature it moves to brackish water after maturing. So, microlepis tolerates FW but it´s not "natural" to them as adults.
Looking at the picture you posted yours seem to be the - more common - T. jaculatrix

i believe that only the Burmese cloud archers are pure freshwater fish. The common ones need brackish water.
