I was just wondering how hardy are Archer Fishes? I had a 2" Archer until last Sunday when it mysteriously died. I've had it for two weeks. It was eating cichlid pellets then it just started loosing its buoyancy. I didn't know what to do so i transferred it to my QT tank. I just did a routine 50% water change on Saturday. After an hour it died.

What can I do to fix this type of situation since this was the first time I actually see one of my fish die? All the other fish are fine.

This is the cichlid section which are freshwater. Please tell me you weren't keeping a brackish fish in a fresh water setup.

^Exactly why this thread is in here. The fish was in a freshwater tank and I figured it was from South America.

Anyways, so what can I do to prevent things like this. I think the fish was getting ready to die when it started "drowning" towards the bottom of the tank. Then after a while it became upside down but its still breathing.

the fish is from australasia and surrounding isles. it needs brackish/ prefers. it can live in freshwater just not for extended periods of time.

many pet and fish stores try to pass brackish fish off as fw. most, especially larger fish, will survive for a time in fw till the water parameters kill them. If your interested in archers, set up a brackish tank with very hard water and feed them a variety of pellets, worms, crickets, and insects for the best results. Putting brackish fish in a fw environment is presenting to them an uphill battle that will eventually kill them.

1. The fish store did try to pass it as freshwater.

2. I didn't do research in it.

I guess that answers the question. It was sort of an impulse buy... Lesson learned

There are several species of archerfish, some are FW but those are not commonly sold. The two species most ofter seen are definitely brackish and go into a slow decline in health where they start catching just about every infection possible until they die. Samr is true of some gobies and "FW" morays.
