Woooot! Just scored a 3 inch Archer Fish for $19.99. This thing is so hardcore that within a minute after I put it in the tank it accepted a food stick and then krill!:headbang2

nice these fish are so cool to bad most don't spit in captivity

Would they spit if you set some sort of branch over the top of the water and they saw an insect walking across it or something. Just a curious question I would love to see that in captivity....

if the setup allows to have plenty of room and places to put the 'bait' there is a good chance to get them to spit, although it does take time IME.

These are a great fish and a personal favourite (probably being one of the cool natives we can keep here).

They do better in brackish in my experience but will tolerate fresh. I also found they did better with a friend or two of their own species aswell.

Will spit for food really easily with some coaxing which can be as simple as sticking some blood worm against the side of the glass just above the water line. They may just jump for it at first (they love to jump for food too) but eventually you will get them spitting. At least this is the method that worked for me.
After that i setup some 'tight ropes' across the top of the tank and used to put crickets/roaches on them and watch them get knocked off.

Oh they can get to a reasonable size too, very very cool fish indeed.
Nice score!

love these guys.
i used to keep them.
but got other fish and sold em.
they can be trained to spit very easily.
i used to keep them in a 4 foot tank only 3 quarters full with a stick above the water.
if they eat fd or frozen and are used to it,you can use that too.
just tie it tight to the stick so they cant get it even if they jump.
they also love mealworms!

I love mine to but the problem is the feeders i buy are from freshwater and so when i put them in they die but my gar only likes live ones

it is good that you got it to accept the food stick, I've always found them a PITA to eat pellets and and things like that. My last one took about 2 months before it started eating NLS
