Anyone have any personal pics or vids of these guys? It's stated that their species is in stable condition, but any threat could easily put them as endangered.

One I found on the net...not my Picth.jpg

Sam Borstien is the only person I know of that has them. Apparently they used to be available in the hobby, but not for the last 6-8 years. Sam has been using them in a research project. You may be able to find some pics and info on his site or at the GCCA site.

I kept and bred them a few years ago. They're pretty quiet and peaceful fish...easily bullied by other CA cichlids.

I kept two pairs in a 2'x2'x1' tank with flowerpots, plastic plants and PVC. They bred in a 6" flowerpot and were pretty good parents.

They seem to max out at about 3-3.5"...get kid of a purple sheen when they're happy.

I traded a bunch of them to Capitol Aquarium in Sac'to (when they were open). Basically had to beg them to take them at $1 credit each...

I figure that most of the ones in the hobby (including the two pairs that I sold when I moved) have disappeared because folks tried to keep them with more aggressive CA cichlids. They'll get bullied by cons, Cryptoheros, Thoricthys, etc.

How long ago Matt? I have never seen them offered, but before four years ago I would not have known what they were.

Did they look anything like the pictures? Did they hang their fry?

It's been since 2006-7, so some time.

They hung their fry on the gunk on the glass and plastic plants (like rainbow cichlids), if I recall...

Like the picture except not as dark...and more violet / purple.

Their lack of current availability is their greatest redeeming feature, in my opinion ;)
