Are 2 FX6's sufficient filtration for a 300 Gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Should be just fine for larger fish with heavy bio load, but maybe a bit much if your stock is still on the small side.

Depending on stock, biologically you'll be fine. You will probably find that the less then 4x turnover rate will make for poor mechanical filtration.

Thanks for the reply's! I"ll start with the two fx6's and down the road add filtration if needed. Bio load should be minimal for a while as the current stock is: 3 red hooks, 5-6" Lima cat, 4" Pictus, and 8" silver Aro.

To add my 2 cents.. fx6 has only 6l (less then 2g) of bio media which sucks for such big filter..1g approx suits for bioload of an adult oscar.. silver aro grows way bigger.. speaking for myself but fx5 and 6 are good for mech filter and light tank stock..

I run a fx5 on a 125, plus a powerhead. I was thinking of adding a second one, but that's definitely overkill. I just like the thought of 2. For a 300, I'd use 3, but 2 should be sufficient. :p

Yeah I actually bought and have three FX6. Ill add the third one in a year or so when my fish can better tolerate the current!!! For Bio media in the filters im not using any Chemical media so each filter I'll fill two baskets full of Seachem Matrix. I also have some large sponge filters that will aid in Bio Media. Hopefully that will be more than enough!!

I run two on my 300g and its fine, takes about 15-20min to clear all the particles after a messy feed in the cichlid community. Tiled bottom too.
