Just got two 7" arowanas put in with my cichla. They took to jumbo carnisticks right away from second day. The pbass nail the pellets but the arowana just calmly and slowly swim to the pellets an grab one one at a time. They are getting plenty because I dump in a lot at once.
All arowana like this not aggressive eaters ? Or does that change with age ?

Mine was like that, it changes with age. He's 24" now and eats aggressively splashing water everywhere. Always fun during feeding time.

I wouldn't get to use to their passiveness. I sold my aro which grew to be 15inches and outgrew the tank. Main reason I let him go was because he started to jump out of the water when it came feeding time. I had to bait him to go to one side of the tank and quickly dump the food on the other side.

As already stated, that won't last. For some reason they feel the need to jump/charge at food as soon as it hits the water when they get larger.

I hand feed mine and he jumps out and bites my hand every time I open the top. Maybe not the best training idea.

That's interesting, I had the opposite experience. My silver aro was a very aggressive eater up until about 12", then he started to take food more calmly. It may have had to do with his tankmates though....when he was smaller, I had him with all sorts of other fish...as he got larger I had him in a tank all to himself, so he probably didn't feel the need to "compete" for food. He took his sweet time getting to whatever I threw in the tank as soon as I moved him to his own.

Give them time. Arowanas don't like dry food too much. They love live food such as super worms, crickets, grasshoppers, and gold fish. They'll go crazy for those.

Reason they become aggressive eaters is probably cause in their natural environment they eat bugs that fall in the water and they want to be the first arowana to get it. (Sorry dunno how to spell arowana ) it's confusing to me

hehehe ... you should try give them live food like SW, crickets, or shrimp and see what happen ... :)
