Looking for some feedback from experienced Altum keepers. I may have an opportunity to purchase some young Altums, imported from Colombia (first time in many many years they have been available in NZ). I'm fairly experienced, but have never kept fresh wild-caught fish nor Altum Angels. I'm aware of the special treatment they require as young, but what I'm wondering is how they will work in my tank once they've grown up a bit. My tank is about 2000L, 240x120x70cm, filtered with big sump with Seachem Pond Matrix, Poret Foam, and Pothos plants which keep the nitrates below 10ppm. My tap water is straight rain water collected off our roof, TDS <10ppm, no hardness. Tank usually sits around pH 6.5-7, TDS 40-60ppm and minimal hardness, and that is with a basket of lime chip sitting in the sump which could be reduced/removed. Current stock is; 11 G. altifrons (9 young and 2 old), 6 Uaru amphiacanthoides, 6 P. scalare, 4 M. festivus, 20-30 lemon tetra, 4 large P. nigrolineatus L190, and 7 B. xanthellus L18.

I was thinking of adding larger group of P. scalare 'Peru Altum', but the owner of the LFS gave me a heads up that the young Colombian Altums are in quarantine now and it's got me thinking! How do the altums get along with other medium-large cichlids like Geophagus and Uaru in larger aquaria?

the altums will be fine with your stock... the issue is getting them strong enough and comfortable enough to go in the main tank... I have a group now that are in with some Uaru F Heckel DIscus Leopaldi angels and some cories... but I have lost many young altums to get here.. Good luck

Thats a beautiful tank, David!

I guess the process of shipping them down here then the 4-5 week quarantine process should have weeded out the weakest ones, but I know they're still quite challenging. Any tips/tricks?
Your tank reads like my dream stock-list! Where can I see some pics??

I've got a 36x14x14" that I use for quarantining new arrivals, I'd certainly be putting them in there for a while first. At what size do you think they could be addded to the main tank?

Haha you would think so ... but sometimes all that weakens them even further,.. lots of heat ( upper 80s minimum) soft water- only small water changes 9 big wc are not good with fresh altums.. and tons of food.

there are a bunch of pics of my tank in the thread.

I have killed several altums on the way to getting my pair. My recommendation is that you have a perfect quarantine setup for them. Make sure they have a tank of decent size with lots of plants or other hiding places. I quarantined mine in a 20g tall for 2 weeks but it was just too small. They wouldn't eat. So I broke quarantine, put them in my 125 community tank and watched them there. They ate 2 days later (frozen first, then flakes in the coming weeks). They are rock solid if you get them through quarantine.

Mine live with congo tetras, roseline sharks, a festivum, chocolate cichlids, other angels (leopoldi and scalare), kribs, catfish, etc...

My tap water is quite hard and alkaline.
