I've been thinking of getting a black ghost knife but I've always heard that they are very sensitive and difficult to keep alive. Any truth to this? Any special requirements that they need?

BGKs are generally hardy and can thrive in a wide-variety of well-maintained environments. They are carnivores that will feed on a wide variety of meaty and prepared foods given the opportunity. Their native range suggests that they do best in soft-water. They can be territorial with members of the same species and are best kept singly. They grow to be quite large so a large tank is necessary for adults.

How were you planning on keeping it?

I was planning on getting a small one and keeping it with a 5 inch senegal bichir in a 30 gal.

At least get a bgk that is bigger than the senegal bichir.

What will you do with it when it needs a larger tank? 90g minimum for the adult-sized fish. Mine only eats live blackworms. They have no scales, so they are extremely sensitive to meds.

regular partial water change, varied diet,a hideout and no chemicals

I think that for now I'm gonna go with a african knife instead. I've had them before and they are pretty neat to watch. I have my new 30gal set up and running with a few glass tetras in it as "test fish". I wonder how long the tetras might last after I add the 5in. bicher. Maybe he wont bother them since he's only used to eating frozen foods

Brown Knifes come from Africa, stay smaller, and have much better vision.. They tend to eat a variety of prepared foods in comparison to the BGK.. tend to be more hardy.

The BGK come from South America, they use electrical sensory to navigate and hunt for food, and can be finicky eaters at times. Competition for food and poor water quality is often the issue with people saying BGK are sensative.. Also poor quality when being purchased.

All knifefish are scaleless and are more susceptible to various issues..
