Are blood parrots sterile? I have been told that they are and have been told that they aren't, and I would just like to know if they are or not.

i think i read sumwhere here that the males are sterile

while the females can lay the eggs and get fertilized by sumthing of the same genus/species

I have a breeding pair, but not really since the male cant fertilize it, but the female does lay eggs and they both protect the eggs until my catfish comes for a good meal.

If the males can't get it up, how do they breed? Or do they have to go back to the original breeders for more blood parrots?

Usually a breeder that breeds blood parrots has the original fish that they created the BPs with. So they can continue doing so. Whether its a red devil/severum or whatever they can continue making them. Otherwise there has been owners of males and females that have bred them and had a tank full of fry. But about 88% of the time the male is sterile.

Its not that the male blood parrot cant get it up, its that his sperm isnt viable.
Blood parrots dont come from blood parrot parents. When they want more blood parrots they just cross breed Red devils and Severums.

It's more like 99% from what I've heard. There are some males that can fertilize, but they are extremely hard to come by. Usually they are labeled as King Kong parrots, and are more of a bright red as opposed to orange.
