Hey guys,

I have had 2 clown knives, both with the same outcome. Bring it home from the shop, it makes it thru the night and when i get home from work the next day, it has died.

Water params are normal, its a well established tank etc etc. They have both been 3" or so from PetCo.

Is there something special about them at that size that they are very sensitive to?

I want to grow out a CKF for my big tank but cant get em past a couple days!

Thanks

I've had 3 CK's from 2 different sources die on me for no apparent reason. They all lived a few weeks so I don't think it was a problem with acclimatising or anything but for some reason they just died.

They were all 3-5"

Pick the ones that are the most active. Don't trust the one propping itself up against the glass. Wave your fingers above the tank. They should show signs of interest. They are relatively hardy fish. Maybe it's just bad luck. Don't let the employee choice the fish. Their just going to choice the easiest ones to catch (which might be a bad sign). So my advice...BE PICKY!

:iagree:
The only problems I've had with clown knives is when the store chooses them. I currently have 4 left out of 6. One jumped out of the tank and the other just croaked for some odd reason. The one that just died for no reason was the one they picked...(granted...it was also from walmart, which happens to be the only fish store within a 60 mile radius of my location...)

But they are very hardy fish and can take a beating before keeling over...

thanks guys, i'll try a real LFS next time. I always feel like an irresponsible owner when i have to take teh dead guy back and get a credit.

theres only one Petco near me that ill actually buy any fish from. as for CKs from petco, its smart to buy the active ones. weve all seen petcos tanks almost never a hiding spot(unless its behind another fish). Knifefish like to hide, it helps with there stalking IMO.

They sell clowns at WALLMART? That is so irresponsible. How many people are going to by that cool looking fish and put it in a 10 gal. Poor fish.

you answered your own question pretty much.

key word was petco.......

How so very true! Petco has the worst reputation for water quality and fish mortality. That is because they went out of their way to earn it. On my first and last visit to petco, they had on average of four dead fish per tank. They had TWO people working the store. One was a manager that was too busy to care, and the other just didn't give a crap. She was playing with the hamsters and was oblivious to me even being in the store. No kidding, I was looking at the fish for over half an hour and she didn't even acknowlege me.

my first one died in a matter of weeks...but that was cause the fire eel was 13inches and the ck was 3...my bad ...i was a rookie the eel was my first and the ck was only my second fish.
