Dither fish are not necessarily provided for aggressive fish to beat on. The definition of dither fish is:
Fish placed in the same aquarium to reassure or soothe other fish. Also, to entice reclusive fish to become more active and to encourage non-feeding fish to feed through competition for food. Usually used with a potential breeding pair to encourage them to spawn by giving them a sense of security. They may also serve as a "target" for the displacement of aggressive behavior between a potential breeding pair.
There's a marked difference between a dither fish and a feeder fish.
agreed, many purposes but im more specifically talking about how, "They may also serve as a "target" for the displacement of aggressive behavior between a potential breeding pair."
sometimes i feel bad for those guys!
i wouldnt want to be born a giant danio or tin foil...
LOL.. in that context ( which is the most accurate description anyway ), then its
fine to keep one. The dither that you are thinking of gr8 , are fishes that have been
put in a tank to diffuse or divert the attention of an aggressive fish towards itself.
I keep so many tough schooling species that I don't think of them as being "dithers." Hell, dorados, redtail brycons, Brycinus macrolepidotus, apollo sharks, black bar silver dollars, Tetragonopterus argenteus, and even Danio dangila can hold their own against aggressive fish. Some, like my dorados, brycons, and Brycinus macrolepidotus, actually dispense ass-whoopings with some frequency.
