So i have four little neon blue juvenile fronts in a 40 gallon and 2 dying plants, I was curious if it is bad for the water quality or at least bad enough to effect the health of my fish if i leave the plants in there even if they are dying?...they still look good that's why i want to keep them for now.

Thanks and appreciate the responses.

Take the plants out. Dead plants add ammonia. And we all know what ammonia does to fish. Not worth the risk.

wow, i was wondering the same thing. I have a 40 gal long with 2 oscars/red tail and 5 plants. they are slowly dieing, but i have more or less hoped they would ocme back to life, and id let the dead stems just die and they seem to dig them out and the filter sucks em up. I havent removed them because i can see new sprouts coming up from teh gravel, so i figured its just the older plant dieing off, and the new ones are coming up.

Should i do more of a trimming to remove the dead brown parts, but leave the fresh green parts? just developed ick in the tank, first time in almost 5 years, (surprised) and afraid it might harm my live plants too

Well..now are we referring to the ENTIRE plant dieing? or just the limbs? Do you guys need to go and trim the plants IN the water? What i thought were dying swords and some other plants, turned out to be not dead at all. After treating for ick, i cleaned around the gravel to discover these plants have sucessfully rooted themselves to the gravel, and going strong, some limbs are brown and fall off, others are green and thriving.

Do i need to do maintenance and pluck the dead limbs and leaves, or should i just let them fall off and the new ones grow in? One plant was 4 inches tall, now it reaches the top of my 40 gallon high, and floats halfway acros, id say its a good 3 feet long now
