I'm sure the obvious answer here is yes, but what I'm really getting at here is the question of 'would a female bluegill be better suited for a 75 gallon tank than a male bluegill?' My 75 gallon currently is stocked with other sunfish so this question is just out of curiosity. But, in the future, I'd like to be able to keep a nice adult bluegill in the 75 gallon. for the most part, i've heard many say that an adult male bluegill is pushing it in a 75 gallon even if its alone...so what about a female? Would her smaller size allow her to live in a 75 gallon tank happily? If I was keeping a female, could I possible keep a few female bluegills together in a 75, or would it still have to be one single adult female? Thanks for clearing this up!

A 75 full of females would be fine - as long as you are okay with having a bunch of drab looking fish.

haha alright, how many are we talking here? and so do you think any male bluegills are off limits for a 75? How big on average should a female BG be expected to grow in captivity?

A male bluegill would be fine as a lone fish in a 75g.

Females aren't always much smaller than the males. It depends on genetics. In some populations the females are significantly smaller, and in some they're around the same size, and the females can be quite large too.

And no, it's not a silly question. In some fish species the females are larger.

For the average female in captivity you're likely looking at 8-9 inches or so, for a male about 10-12". The max of 15-16" is unlikely to be obtained regardless of sex.
