Hello all MFK, i just cut some 20"+ bamboos trimed it down, I was wondering if its safe to put inside an aquarium with fish.
Anything hazard about them? All knowledge is greatly appreciated.

Thankyou,

They sell it at petsmart, it won't grow submerged though. Probably rots after a while.

they will probably be safe. im assuming your talking about real bamboo and not lucky bamboo(i have this in my tank but thinking of removing as it makes dogs and cats sick).

Bamboo is not an aquatic plant. You can submerse the stalk, but not the entire plant. As far as putting it in a fish tank,it should be fine as long as you do not cover the whole plant with water.Just the bottom few inches submersed is all they need.

I have bamboo. It's completely submersed. lasts about 6 months. The loaches eat the skin off the outside of it.

"Lucky bamboo" sold at petsmart and such isn't really bamboo, but is Dracaena. I don't think regular bamboo would be toxic- it's used in vivariums for reptiles & amphibians. I've seen it used for Dendrobates, and those are EXTREMELY delicate.

I have bamboo rowing in some of my sumps. They grow great and I'm sure they're pulling some nasties out of the water. The oldest plant was 10" when I placed in an an oscar tank sump. Now, it's over 6ft tall and produced a number of daughter plants.

6 feet? Damn Phil, didn't know you have a hammer and a green thumb.

Wow! thanks for responding, much support!
Just to be specific, these bamboo are not the lucky bamboo or the ones they sell in petsmart. The bamboo i have are growing in a no water/creek area. The land was dry and they are 20"+ feet. I cut the growing branches and leaves off. Now they are pole shape. I wonder how long they will last in the fish tank. How dirty the water can become?
