I wanted some giant danios as "filler" for my growout tank. a nearby store has them for $1 each. Would these be good? If not, what is another good option? Part of me is interested in mollies for getting some live food for my ghost knife. Ultimately though, he eats pellets and such just fine, so i doubt he will need any live.

I had a school of 10-12 giant danios at one time. They seemed to make my fish nervous because they were always moving so fast. They were also nippy at small sized fish. Zebra danios are nice if their tank mates can't eat them.

In my experience, they are one of the hardiest fish I've found. Some relatives moved and they basically sat in a glorified bucket for 2 days. The same fish is still alive and the bully of the tank (20g community at a relatives) having survived multiple plague outbreaks, horrid water params, etc.

edit:
Noticed you were looking for filler, not cycle. They do tend to be nippy, so I wouldn't recommend them. Maybe some cardinal tetras, or something along those lines? Might help if you let us know the tank size and what you're typically growing out in it.

I am using them as a dither fish, only have 8 right now and haven't noticed them being nippy. Have made my GTs come out of hiding more (growing them out atm to see which one I want to keep), prior all they did was hide and after adding the Giant Danios they are out cruising the tank and eating their pellets.

i started with 8 of them in my 210, but they are bullies! they will single weaker ones out so you need alot (right now my group of 6 seems to get along alright now that the two little guys are gone--never found out what happened but my pictus cats had very big bellies). but they are beautiful fun fish. They will most likely only annoy bigger fish, your knives and eels will probably be fine as they have hiding spots and wont draw attention. They do like cooler water and fast currents though

I've had them with my Red Bellied Piranhas for years. They are some of the fastest and hardiest fish I've ever had. I started with 10 in my 220 with 9 reds and I have 5 left after a year. As the reds get bigger, they become less interested in them. I just love having a nice school as they are constantly zipping back and forth across the tank.

i'd go for a school of some rainbow fish. very pretty and can get good size for growout cichlids and they swim like danios but are actually attractive, but are a little more than $1 lol

For me, I can get a Giant Danio for $1.29, the cheapest Rainbow I can get is $15...for dithers for larger fish I'd be upset at providing a $150 dollar lunch ^^

Slightly on topic... I've seen Austrailian rainbows in stores for 2 bucks. The ones I see though, are really dull and have barely any color. over a year ago i bought a few, and their color only improved slightly. Today, i go online and see these:

how can i get mine like that?
