I rescued a Jack Dempsey from a neglected wall mart tank. He had fungal problems and ich. It took a month and a half to nurse him back to health with the help of rid fungus and aquarium salt. He is now in my 55 with my prized 3.5" Blue Acara and 7" poly bichir . The Jack dempsey is about 4.5" and since he was put in the 55 is always watching for me and nose rubs the glass until he gets some sinking carnivore pellets. Are they always hungry or is this a rebound from being so emaciated and eating very little when I first got him ?
Also he tears after the blue acara and has the thing hiding quite often. Is there any way to help the aggresion issues ? He doesn't bother my chinese algae eater or my bichir just the acara...

Thanks in advance fellas and ladies :)

I would say on the food part, probably wasn't fed so well and now he sees it as a last chance to eat kind of attitude. I wouldn't feed him any more than normal though.

My crazy upstairs neighbor lady has an Acara and a JD and they seem to have a love hate relationship... I would try to rearrange the tank.

My baby JDs act like that but its cuz thy're growing.
Your guy probably didnt get fed very well at wally world.
I've always kept my JDs pretty much in a species environment..
or with other equally aggressive cichlids.
My Jds have always hid a lot.
Maybe make more hiding spots like caves etc etc..

I see. I rearranged the tank and did a 50% water change maybe he will establish a territory and stop killing my poor acara

Funny you mention that I got 20 pound of lava rock and like 6 caves. Also 2 bottomless flower pots. and no matter what he follows me at the front of the tank wanting to be fed anytime I walk by He never hides either. If the acara goes to hide he chases him out of the cave and goes back to begging for food :screwy:

Well i guess if the Acara "runs" so to speak..he just knows he can chase him.
So its like cat and mouse deal.

how long have you had him?

The acara or the JD?
The acara about 16 days and the Jack Dempsey I bough a month and a half ago.
He was in my 20 gallon fish hospital for 35 days until he completely recovered. Now hes been in the main tank with the acara about a little over a week I guess

IDK IMO.. wow that was a lot of abbreviations..
anyways..
I think JDs are too aggressive to be kept with an acara..
acaras are semi aggressive i supose..
but JDs are just very aggressive so they need to be with others that are the same. At least if you want to see the Acara more..you should probably seperate them.
