Me and my bf had JDs mine was a female and his a male - so I threw mine in his tank and months later they finally decided to breed. So now there are tons and tons of eggs. Anyways as eggs and when the eggs are babys - will the JDs eat them? I know other tankmates are a threat but what about them as parents? Or should I remove them from the parents once they are swimming little fish?? I never breed SA cichlids before so I know didly about them.

Well mine just had a batch of fry and I have to say they were excellent parents. This was there first time and it was my first time so i had no idea what to expect. They are about 1/4" to 3/8" now and still being protected, they killed one pleco and one picus cat now. The other fish had to be removed. But it is really interesting watching them gather them up from time to time and spitting food at them when they were smaller.

JDs in my experience are FANTASTIC parents! True, they may ned a few tries before they get it right, however when I had a breeding pair, they took excellent care of their fry strating fromthe very first batch

I've heard that once they become freeswimming, then you can take them out before the parents eat them, ready for the next batch.

they are good parents but like spike says they might eat the first batch or so I always take the rock or pot that the eggs were layed on out and put it into a tank by itself.... BUT MAKE SURE THERE IS NO GRAVEL.. I have lost many babies to becoming stuck in the gravel.... this will make your survival rate much higher atleast in my experience when I left the eggs in I ended up with about 50 babies when I removed to a clear bottom tank I ended up with hundreds
