I have the opportunity to get a female mota to go with my male. He is 3ish inches. Is it probable he would tolerate a female? Or are they pretty brutal on each other?

Very brutal on everybody most of the time. Dropping in a new female into his established tank probably won't turn out well so personally I would start with a divider.

Depending on the size of the tank, and tank mates, especially if both motaguense see the other tank mates as competition. And if they are compatible, and both are ready to spawn, could be, but if they are not, one could be dead within a day or 2.
If the they see the others as competition, and they want to spawn, all other tank mates could be dead in a day or 2.
When mine wanted to spawn, all others in the tank were doomed.

Yeah I don't know yet if I should, he seems to be hyper aggressive. Tried Africans and danios with him and one by one he killed them. Except for an OB Zebra that for some reason tolerates

They are wife beaters....I would suggest that if you are going to introduce a female to....
1. place a secure divider and see how they interact... if or when you decide to remove the divider... 2.have rocks, pvc ,and /or other types of aquascape of your choice to provide sight barriors and hiding spots...
I have my pair in a 150g with pvc that has strategically placed rocks against the openings so that only the female can get in and out of(it helps that the female is half the size of the male). After a few weeks the female started coming out on a regular basis they spawned ...They now get along pretty well and the female is out much of the time and goes in the pvc for safety only when the male gets into one of his moods....
