Are Mayans fun to keep?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ive only kept canal mayans so i dont know if captive breds act different but imo they are pretty laid back fish. I havent seen them be neither ridiculously aggressive nor shy either. As far as entertaining, i wouldnt say theyre glass bangers.

I have 2, so my experience is rather small. Mine are real glass bangers.

My experience mirrors Woofy's, I had some years ago, a pair spawned in a community cichlid tank, and without becoming manic they protected their fry. The male was about 10", female 1/3rd smaller.
I have snorkeled with them, in cenotes in Mexico, and they get quite large there, at least a ft in length, and can easily cross 100yds in a less than a minute, and go from near waters surface to depths of 20 or 30 ft in a similar manner.
The ones in brackish and sea water seem to have more brilliant colors, whether its the salt, or if they are a sub species and thus different genetics, is interesting to me.
There is a group living in the mangrove of Isla de Mujeras, an island of the coast of the Yucatan in Mexico, living in straight sea water.

The brackish colors are amazing.

I conccur that the colours of those you mention, sw and brackish do not compare to the ones we find in here, thriving in fw

Can anyone provide more info or pictures on the brackish or salt water mayans?

My experience is blackish water have deeper red.

From my experience with them. They will be a lil more out going then true red terrors. You will get better colors in brackish waters then fresh although I've seen and had one that was straight fresh that looked amazing. Sorry no pic as it was on a phone I lost. I've also seen a few on here with nice coloring and marks.
