hello all, i have a 65 gallon tank 48x18x18 has been established for approx 2 years that currently has 2 angelfish, 1 black ghost knife approx 16cm, a bn catfish, a chinese algae eater 9cm, 3 large silver dollars, a rainbow shark and 4 serpae tetras.

i was wondering if these fish are suitable for the community tank, im a bit concerned about the rainbow shark and the algae eater, as i have read they can be aggressive when they mature. They were fine up until about 2 weeks ago, now they're being real bullies and chasing each other around the tank. i am worried that they might turn their attention to the bgk or my bn catfish. should i get rid of them.

is my tank fully stocked, as i know that the bgk will get rather large, or could i add some more wet pets. if so, any suggestions on what may be suitable.

thank you, suki

my chinese algae eater got nasty and tried to suck on my midas which tubby didnt appreciate and she killed the algae eater. keep an eye on it for sucking the slime off your taller fish. it may even start to fight with your bristlenose.
your rainbow and CAE will be aggressive towards each other beacuse they have a similar shape to each other. both have high levels of conspecific aggression (i think thats the right phrase). one will likely kill or badly damage the other.
i wouldnt add any more fish but i would instead take out the chinese algae eater. just my opinion though.

thank you for your replies. thank goodness you had said to remove the CAE, because i dont really like it anyway, it was one of the first fish in the tank, and i quite like the look of the rainbow shark. I cant wait to see the size of the BGK as an adult, i've never seen one larger than approx 20cm. Do you think that the shark at some point might try to attack the knife as they are similar size and colour.

This is just me, but I think the knife and rainbow shark should be fine. I'd keep an eye on the shark with the serpae tetras though. back when I had a 10 gallon I only had 1 serpae tetra left, and being the genius I was back then, I got a rainbow shark. Well next day the serpae tetra died cause the shark kept ramming into it. You should have enough room and enough fish that even if the shark does feel like beating the crap out of something it'll be spread out. I'm not the most experienced guy here mind you, this is just my opinion.

well i took the CAE back to my lfs, the rainbow doesnt seem as edgy now, so calm is restored, thank you ppl for your advice. and wasnt i enlighted to read about the 1" fish rule on this site, i didn't realise that it was 1 square inch. this is such a great site. and i definitely wont be adding anything else to my tank after reading about the inch/gallon rule. i would love to see my wet pets grow to their old age in peace. thanks again ;)
