I have 1 male, and what I am assuming are 3 females. The three females, in just the last couple of weeks, have made little nests on both ends and in the center of the tank. Before this, they were just free swimming around. They've cleared out all of the substrate and made it tidy. The big guy is acting more frisky too. I've never had breeding cichlids before. Just want to know what's happening. They're about 3 years old now. 20210717_203326.jpg20210330_170808.jpg

3 years is definitely old enough for female frontosa, probably for males, but not always. You may be able to see a bit of a bulge in females with eggs, but when they're getting near ready to spawn you can see their tubes down. Spawning typically begins with male and female picking a spot, chasing others away, and circling each other. It helps for them to have a bit of an open spot away from direct filter current.

Sometimes digging a pit is just territorial, doesn't always mean they're getting ready to spawn. So you want to look for the other signs, tube down is the most obvious.

Thanks! That clears up a bit.
