Punishments differ from state to state. Anything can get shipped to any state for a price, but as a responsible fish keeper, I dont think it would be wise to break a federal law. I could only imagine fines and possible imprisonment would be imposed

ive heard that it is up to 10,000 a fish and up to two years in a federal prison

OK punishment in texas is a class c misdemeanor
$25-500

depending on whether or not you live near a body of water the fine will be small usually

whoever told you that gave you the punishment for a CITES listed and or federally banned animal

I know I'm gonna catch hell for this (To each his own. . .BUT . . .Piranhas really are somewhat boring fish. I was so excited when I moved out state years ago to Alaska and I could finally own them legally. And yeah. . . . .ugly shy pacus with an underbite. The ones I have now are rescues from a customers tank disaster. Not encouraging you by any means, Texas has these laws for a reason. . . but seriously If your gonna bother trying to get something illegal it might as well be something cool like rays or even better Payara. . . . .sigh I miss my little whitewater sabretoothed monsters.
