I've been studying the different morphs lately and I'm wondering if the white alligator gars they've been breeding over in Asia are considered "leucistic" or not.

I'm assuming yes, but I almost never see the morph term used on "platinum" fish such as arowana. Was wondering if there is any difference other than a flashier name-

flashier name...platinum is more easily understood by the general populace of fishkeepers than leucistic (and sounds cooler to most people too).

in general, red eye & white = albino, normal eye & white = leucistic.--

PS - speaking of albinos...they are extremely rare in gars, i can't remember the last time i even saw a photo of one.

I've never seen an albino gar photo, then again I have never looked.

A bowfin anglers website shows a photo of someone holding an albino or leucistic bowfin. They released it of course, they were just fishing, but I wonder if they knew how rare it was.

could possibly be due to reflection, as u can see, the white surface of the boat is pretty overexposed too. impressive specimen nonetheless

That might definitely be enhancing it, but the shadow seems to show the fish has some definite whiteness to it.

thanks for posting MasterB, i have seen that photo before, but it's been a long time. not sure if the consensus came to leucistic or albino...since we can't get a good look of the eye, and given the "higher" frequency of leucism seen, i think we thought it was leucistic.--
