I have an AC110 on a 40 gallon grow out and for the first time I put my head against the tank and it is LOUD! It's like me operating with a jackhammer in the background!

Is this normal for power filters? My fish don't seem to be visibly stressed. I am thinking in the long run the vibration directly on the glass will damage my tank sealant as well as my fish.

No. If you were able to swim in some of the waterways that our hobby fish originate from, you will realize that fish are tough and can handle waterflow-related noise.

its not about the fish being able to handle the noise! its all about if YOU can!!!!

^never thought about this :D

I don't think it's an impeller problem because it is fairly new and the audible noise has not changed since I got it new!

do you have anything stuck in the impeller?
for my penguin hobs i find that a small grain of sand(if i stir the sand near the HOB) or small plant leaf makes the thing really noisy. i just shut it off, pull out the impeller and put it back in a few times and the noise stops. i have a shelf on top so i cant pull out the entire hob :P

I just put my ear on tanks that run 2 Penguins and also AC110's, and they all have a good hum to them, so I don't think his filter is malfunctioning. It must be the vibration of the impellar, and since it is not isolated from the tank as in cannisters, you can hear the vibrations. Never seen it bother the fish though.

Burt :)

even if it did bother a fish at first i think they would adjust. i had a friend that lived next to the rail road tracks. he wouldn't even notice when a train went by even though the whole house would shake becouse he had gotten used to it.
