so are they? ive have mushrooms and polyps and i'm thinking about getting a toadstool and possably a trumpit coral...

Well, probably it depends on if you want fish or not. Most of the softies you mentioned actually like their water a touch more on the nasty side than sps species. I'd say you'll be much better off with one but, have to no... You just won't be able to stock as much. As a matter of fact you can use shrooms as a nutrient export system in some tanks they reproduce so quickly.

Mantis shrimp get large, and are very powerful....I don't know how a tan gallon would work out.

im not getting a large mantis, certianly not a peacock i was thinking more along the lines of a G. Smithii (only get about 9cm full grown)

The need for a skimmer depends of course on your system. There are a great many reef tanks that get along just fine without one, including mine. They are however nice to have around in case something does happen and you need help taking something out of the water, such as happens with coral spawning, or if a phytoplankton bloom needs to be cleaned up. Other than that, there is no real need for one. IF... your system is set up properly and stocked properly.

In your case, you would be better off with carbon than a skimmer when keeping mushrooms and zoanthids.

I have them on all 3 of my reef tanks: 90g, 40g, 15g.
