Just wondering if red tigers were a hybrid species? I saw a picture of one kind of looks like a jag x dempsey. Awesome looking fish none the less!

Neither red tiger motas nor red tiger oscars are hybrids. You didn't specify which but sounds like you mean mota.
Red tiger Motoguense come from the Rio Motogue vally in southern Guatamala and northern Honduras. Ken

If you see Motoguense in a pet store they are almost always the gold variety bred on Florida fsh farms. Look in the vendor section here for red tigers, I don't have any right now, but Rapps might.
