I'm thinking of putting a 9 inch redtail catfish in with my 17 inch silver aro?

Do they make the water dirty, I'm worried about the water quality going down?

Yeah...they are dirty.

There's no question that they'll put a strain on the bioload of that tank.

Another thing I just thought of is that the Redtails need very high water quality as well, so you know you'll be doing a lot of water changes anyway.

180 GALLON TANK WITH 55 GALLON SUMP, QUIET ONE 6000 PUMP, FLUVAL 403, AND A FX3, TURBO TWIST 9X UV STERILIZER

ONE 17 INCH SILVER ARO AND 9 INCH RED TAIL CATFISH ONLY

They're dirty only if you don't wash and wax them every other week.

lol, they foul the water if not adequate in filtration or tank size. You don't have the means presently to keep this bad boy for life, but you could keep him for a few years in that tank.

RTC's are no 'dirtier' than any other fish their size. Most RTC's IMO are overfed by owners wanting instant monsters and this only compounds the problem.

ALL fish require good water quality and it's the job of anyone keeping them to provide the best environment possible....HOWEVER I haven't found RTC's to be any more difficult in this respect than any of our other fish.
