Yes they are legal in the US....Not sure on the fish you can keep in cali. But I see them sold all the time.

Just some advice, do your research cause there are many different species called payara. And some are very hard to keep alive and some are easier. And they have different personallities. There is one species that has been nicknamed the 2week scomb cause most die with in the first 2 weeks.

unfortunately the most awesome and hardiest species are also the most expensive and hardest to find.
and the cheapest ones are the easiest to kill.

they dont live long and arent very hardy.
and they cant compete with your other fish in terms of everything.

Its strange how this fish is legal in the US, and Cali specifically, and some other fish who seem less threatening, are illegal. I soemtimes dont understand how they come up with this stuff.
