Are salvini's shy? He's going to be in a tank to himself, I was just wondering if this so-called "mini-guapote" was a lurker or not. What do you guys with salvini's past and present think of their activity and shyness level?

i just bought myself a bit female and ive got several juvies, they dont seem shy at all...if anything i would say they are fairly competent and dont have a problem sticking up for themselves. i definately wouldnt say shy

By themselves, they are exceedingly shy. This changes in a community or if you have a pair.

nah not shy at all

get more than one. singles seem to hide all the time

IME Salvini's can be shy if they are kept with other agressive cichlids and are not high in the pecking order. For example, if it is in with 4 other cichlids and it is 1st, 2nd or 3rd in command, they'll be ok. If they're in the bottom half of the pecking order they can end up hiding A LOT.

If "he" wil be alone it'll be fine. But I'd go with a female as a single specimen as they have 10x the color and turn a vibrant yellow if you take your time and find a good one. females have a spot in the middle of the dorsal fin.

If you have a big enough tank get a pair. I hear their breeding colors are amazing :headbang2
