I have an open top tank and I love how bright the tank looks.

Cleaning with the algae magnet yesterday my sev freaked a bit and looked like he got close to jumping out.
Should I just clean the glass with the lights out, or are they prone to jumping and I should just put the top back on?

I don't want to come home and find him dried to the floor.

If spooked, they can and will jump. They don't think, they just react. Sometimes that means dashing for the bottom. Sometimes it means dashing for the surface. I definitely wouldn't do the algae magnet with the lights out because it may freak him out even worse.

IMO I would find a way to cover the tank if possible.

funny - every time I clean the glass with the magnet thingy, my fish react like it's the end of the fish world. If I don't have lids on I'd have fish all over the floor. I wonder why they are so afraid of the magnet!

^ Mine are afraid of anything light colored that moves fast -- magnet, towel when I'm cleaning the front glass, etc. The sound of them slamming into the glass and splashing always stresses me out because I picture them knocking themselves to death. It's a stressful time for all involved.

Note, add dark colored towels to ryan's xmas list. :grinno:

Ginny Eckstein, one of my favorite fish authors, always said "Any fish can jump, sometimes only once."

I dont use a magnet with my clowns for this reason, too fast even in a 6' tank! Less light to reduce algae growth and a couple of plecs is my answer
