I've heard this from several people but wanted more opinions...

Are snails in your canister benificial? Anybody here practice this?

Could somebody please eloborate why they would or would not be....???

:feedback: :feedback: :feedback:

ive had them before. didnt do anything to my knowledge- as in i detected no change. they were just MTS

I have a bunch of snails climbing their way into my W/D through the return... You will have to wait to find out what the changes are if any.

Someone here has pm'ed awhile back about this particular subject, unfortunately I erased it(accidently)....But after reading what he told me, I went to the store and purchased snails forevery filter(biological part) I have....The setup he has is a bunch of FilStars xP's....Apparently he fills every compartment with crushed coral and throws in snails with each level....Snails break down the fish waste(right?)....

Snails would be great at breaking up sludge, but if we change the prefilter than it isn't a concern. If they are in with biomaterial they will keep them stirred up and prevent them from channeling becuause of crud perhaps?

I stuck a couple dozen MTS in my canister, they didn't reduce the maintenance any, but after putting some in with the bio media It had alot less (it was noticeable atleast) mulm buildup after 2 months then usual. Depending on how your filter is built, you may want to put a filter pad after where you stick them or they could jam the impeller.

anybody else?

Whenever I clean my filters I find MTSs in there. I do not believe it makes too much of a difference in filtration - they just do in the filter what they normally do in my tank: eat leftovers and crap.

This discussion per se is of theoretical nature only, since any snails in your tank eventually end up proliferating in your canister. There is nothing you can do against it, there is not much you can do to encourage it... it just happens
