ARE SPONGE FILTERS GOOD OR NOT

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
they are great. cheap and very efficient biological filters. Many have used them over the years (myself included). You will need something else for mechanical though.

Yes and no...it depends on the application.

In reality they are great, simple filters. Arguably the best simple filter. The issue is when you start getting huge tanks with large stock loads. You would need a lot of sponge filters to be able to keep up with the filtration.

Very underrated, but super effective. Just an eyesore and takes up a bit of space in an aquarium. Filtration choice for breeding tanks

Highly effective, and wonderfully simple... but mechanical filtration is needed.

As was pointed out to me some time ago, sponge filters work as both biological and mechanical filter. Remember the ac 500? All sponge.

This site has a wonderful search function you should check out. Here you go. Plenty of info there and it's still a current thread. Really no need to start another thread about the same topic when most of your questions have likely already been addressed.
