Hi, I have one of those 3d rock backing things and I am growing tired of it. I was thinking of taking it out and painting the back of my tank but someone made me an offer on my spare tank I couldn't refuse so I would have nothing apart from large buckets to keep my fish in while I did it and I think it might be to messy to remove with the fish in?

So I was thinking of buying some fake plantage and attaching it to the backing but apart from staples or drawing pins I can't think what to attach them with?

Are staples ok in the aquarium? Any other ideas of what I can use?

Unless they are stainless steel, they will corrode, even then if they are low quality stainless they may corrode. I think medical staples would work, good luck finding those though and they need a special stapler.

I am not sure exactly what you are trying to accomplish but maybe plastic zip ties?

I use fishing line to attach things in the tank a lot...

That's a logical and good idea!

And they make that aquarium epoxy stuff also, it comes as a piece of clay/putty and you knead it to activate it. It works in a wet environment as well and is completely fish/coral safe.

If it's dry you could use silicone
