What is the best way to lower the hardness of your tap water. I have never seen a solution like seachem or API for reducing the hardness of the water. When checking mine it always seems to be off the scale. The Carbonates are within limits, but the hardness is always high. Ph usually runs around 7.5 from the tap but drops once in the aquarium to about 7.0. Any idea to make the water softer, what are the benefits, and where to get the products from.

If your fish are happy, healthy and aren't wild caught don't worry about it. If your fish were bred locally they are most likely used to the water.

Unless you are trying breed discus.... leave it alone.

African cichlids tend to do better with hard water, and some tetras do better in soft water...

Mixing your tap water with R/O water will lower your GH and your KH both.

Since your name is dovii man and I'm assuming you're in to central American cichlids, they like hard water and a high ph anyway (not as high as some African cichlids, but your parameters are just fine).

Yes cichlids use to be my thing, and yes water issue were never a problem but since joining this website, I have ventured away from cichlids and are trying other type fish like rays, tig cats, armatus, GATF, and Dat's so I was wondering if I should be concerned about water hardness. So far I have had no problems but the more I get into all this water testing and parameters, its the long term effect/ damage I am reading it can do to a fish so I am checking all angles. When I was in the cichlids community I never ever tested my waters or was concewrned aboout parameters and have grown some of the largest cichlids with no issues, from butterkoifri's to Umbee's and averthing in between.
