So I found these guys on Craigslist for $80 each and the guy says he bought them off aquascaponline as Armatus but I'm not positive. I checked the ID thread and I can't quite tell, the bad quality pictures he sent plus the small caudal fin are what confuse me most. Can someone tell me if they're Armatus or not? And should I buy them if they aren't? I really want a few Armatus and these guys are 9 inches each so I'd really like to get them... Thanks!

Looks like red tail tats.

Are red tails hardy? I've heard about payara dying randomly within the first 6 months. I had a baby schom die after 8 and I did everything I could to keep the water perfect. Would they be worth grabbing?

The pics are kinda hard to see the tails, but they kinda look like tats to me as well. Not positive though.

As with the random deaths, I've had my scombs and armati(pl?) for about 10 months now and they're as healthy as could be. I think with scombs, if you get them young, you'll be able to keep them well past the 1 year rumor. Mine were 3" when I got them and now they're only about 5"-6" so their growth rate is extremely slow. I heard they die when they're about a foot so I'm sure I still have quite a bit of time with mine.

Edit: whether they be tats or arms, I still think it'd be worth grabbing cuz they're amazing to keep and the price isn't that bad for the size that they are.

Maybe I was doing something wrong with mine. If I get these guys I know I gotta work twice as hard and make them my main focus instead of my Florida Gar because he's been really easy the past few months.

Just so you can compare your tank, my scombs are in a 40b, temp is 82F, there's a large powerhead rated for 150g/hr, it's highly oxygenated with a large airstone and I do 50% wc every week. My 2 army's used to be in there as well, but now they're in a 150g and the only difference is that the only flow comes from the hob filters.
