The larger male was sold to me as Herichthys Carpintis. He's approximately 15 month's old. The smaller female came from the same LFS after it had changed hands. She was called a Green Texas Cichlid. I was told she is related to carpintis but not the same. She is eight months old. They are now a breeding pair. Wasn’t sure about their identification because they look so different.

I thought they were two different but related species. But after much research I think they are just different variations of the same species??? thoughts?8640DF9A-0294-4E39-B61F-8D09DEC0190C.jpeg

Need to see their faces. Carpinte always have full pearls on forehead and between eyes and texas don't. This is a starting point but not the final determination because hybrids carry trates of both species. My guess both are slightly mixed. Female texas and slightly mixed. Male carpinte and slightly mixed. Plz don't take offense. Both are beautiful and if your not a breeder just enjoy them. Now a days it almost impossible to find true midas that doesn't have red devil or true trimac that doesn't have flowerhorn or a true carpinte that doesn't have texas so don't flood the market with fry and recommend people to legitimate breeders for pure breed fish.

Thank you for your help! Here are close ups. First is Large male. Second is small feminine . Third is the final tankmate, smaller male who is same age as female.E603CDF2-63B6-44B3-8743-77D00CD393E7.jpeg456DF522-3797-42AF-B879-3C197A3F37B7.jpegBDCF548F-1FD4-4D2D-B980-8A63C9CB3AA7.jpeg

H carpintus laguna Chairel above, note the facial striations.
Herichthys tamasopoensis below note the lack of striations

There are a number of Herichthyines that look similar, but because they have been interbred for so long, its hard to distinguish.
Unless they are from a respected breeder who does not combine species, one who respects the integrity of a species, it is nearly impossible to tell .
Unless yours is from one of a respected source, it should be considered "aquarium strain" possible hybrid.

1st is carpintis . Other two cyano.
