I am leaning towards doing an eartheater tank for my 55 gallon, with a mixture of other fish. Would any of the following fish work well together?: geophagus, gymnogeophagus, angelfish, festivums, keyholes, cory cats, and a pictus cat. Would they make good tankmates? What potential problems should I look for?

The only potential problem I see is the adult size and temperament of some of these fish. I had a 60 that was basically full with 1 angelfish 1 ram and a small school of tetras. They now reside in a 90 with a few small plecos and a couple of livebearers. The angelfish(Lucy) is about 6" around and demands at least 40-50 gallons of tank-space.

Not saying alot of that stock couldn't work, but angels need space, especially adults. I'd stick with geos and some pictus or cories. Just my experience.

Gymnos and the other fish will have different temperature requirements. Some 'Geophagus' grow to a foot long and would ideally be kept in something bigger than a 55g, so you need to decide which species to keep. Pictus get large(ish), I'd leave them and the gymnos out.

You could keep a smaller species of geo (red head tapajos, for example) in that tank with either angels or festivums and corys, along with a school of tetras perhaps.
