Are these LED's okay for corals?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use some of these lights to on a FOWLR tank at my lab.

Nothing really growing on the LR...then again I dont know if it is this exact unit.

Based on what I can read on that page I would say no.

No, not likely.
They are might make light of the right color, but they are not going to be bright enough. There are no specs given, but LEDs that are bright enough, in a package of that size would cost hundreds of dollars.

The other issue to consider is the size of your tank. How many gallons, how deep, and what corals? While this tank might work fine over a 5 gallon tank with soft corals (maybe), it wouldn't be enough for a 30" 120 gallon tank.

They are bright enough but not the complete spectrum for corals as far as I know. the 20 watt LED are bright enough to perfectly spot Corals but they are 6000k not 10000k and have no blue or UV. I think they could be part of a reef lighting system but not all of it. Edit!! I thought you meant the spotlights from LED Wholesalers.....those panels are garbage low intensity LED. They make the real deal at Ecoxotic for about 500 bucks and it works......But most looking at LED wholesalers are looking for cheaper systems.....It would cost over a thousand to light my 30" deep 150 gallon tank with reef ready LED but it would pay itself in energy and bulb savings in about three years.

The best lighting I have ever spent money on. If you are crafty enough to do a DIY fixture or if you allready have a hood then these things really are D - Shiznit. They do a fantastic job, and come with all the perks of LED lighting (super low heat, MUCH easier on the electric bill than MH's etc). They are expensive up front (you can aloways add more over time if funding is low) but over their 5 year life span they end up being way cheaper than a MH/VHO/T5/PC set up.
