Hi,

I have these two PBass's for a year now.
Are these monocs?

The bigger one with a hump is about 13inches.

The smaller one with darker dorsal fin, maybe about 11inches.
Im not sure if it's a male or female. Is this male or female?

I plan to put them in a larger tank or pond for breeding, if I have a pair.
Happy fishkeeping. Thanks.

how big is that tank? i would say a male andfemale but its probably too soon to tell, and im no expert either, but one has a hump and the other doesnt, thats a good sign

Hi gekkecichla,

currently they're in a 75gal tank, there's also 2 small cichlas and 3 small oscars in that 75gal so I installed a divider.
I plan to put the Pbass's on a 180gal or 150gal for breeding.

they are deff monos.. as for male and female.. i can tell you that you deff have one male. honeslty the other has the same body shape but looks as if he ddnt form the hump yet :( wait some time and if it doesnt form.. good luck

Thanks boosten audi,
I been staring at the PBass's this morning and found another difference from the two. The male has a pointed anal fin, while the other one has a rounded anal fin.

Male? Female? ***? Lesbian?

Could this be another basis for sexing?
Or should I just separate the two and wait if the other one develops its musculinity. Maybe he/she is dominated by the male so he/she couldn't show his/her dominance.
Thanks.

That's a definite difference in those two fish. Google for sexing by venting. Take them out of the water and take a gander at their pooper. Then let us know what you find and if there is a difference, and we can establish from others that their fish have the same anal fin characteristics by sex, then maybe we'll be able to develop a new way of sexing pbass, or monocs at least..

Hi Danh,

I'm a little worried about venting them as I might stress the fish.
Worst they might break the tank if I don't properly capture them.
Venting is in my last option for now but I've been practicing venting with some tilapias in our small pond.
Thanks.

lol......dont separate them. see if you can just take a peak under

i forgot with other cichlids, longer fins are males
