Hey guys I was wondering for your opinions on these two little guys...the fish store owner reassured me that they were in fact festae not Mayans cause I know that happens a lot. Tank you for your opinions. I apologize not the best pictures they are constantly moving
I would say Mayans. The tail spot is the full height of the tail, Festae tail spots are only on the upper half of the tail. Also festae get a y bar just behind the eyes, Mayans dont.
The spot on the caudal penduncle will be oriented in the upper portion, rather than centered, this is the most accurate way I’ve heard of to differentiate the two before they begin to color up. These guys look to be about 2” I’m guessing? My festae I posted are about 2 inches. Just for a color and shape reference.
I also agree, here is a young festae to compare (may be the same size as your fish
that said, although uropthalmus may not be as striking in color, they are a great species to keep.
