I got a ton of slate rock and want to basically build a wall with caves and everything, but is this rock ok to use with my JD, GT, and firemouth? It came from the shore of a lake.

I would clean it good but other than that I wouldn't see why not.

Normally I suggest doing the vinegar test to see if it's calcareous rock but with your fish you wouldn't have to worry.

Soak/boil/scape!

You could pour some boiling water over it to try and clean it real well, or even put it in a small, empty tank/container with a PP solution to kill any organics in it... As long as it passes the vinegar test and you clean it real well, you should be fine.

clean and good too go

I've collected alot of of rocks from the woods by me with out any problems other then a bad case of poision ivy. I usaully wash them in hot water scrubbing it down as best I can with my hand and a brand new tooth brush then place them in a bucket filled with water for a few days. Also changing the water daily then after a week placing them in the aquarium . I have not lost any fish doing this process.
