Rocks from paving companies are generally less safe (more likely to have contaminants) than those from landscaping companies. Be real safe by going down to the river and collecting there... look for nice rounded rocks... rocks that have eroded their hard edges have been in the stream long enough that they are no longer reactive, so just about whatever your find is probably safe. You can vinegar test just to be sure. Downside here is that whatever you collect you then have to sanitize since it's coming right out of the stream.

The stone used for your base under a driveway is called rip rap. I would be carful with them since they are probably exposed to more contaminates than your typical landscape rock. Test them with vinegar like previously mentioned. Also your local landscaping supplier will usually have cheap prices on nice stone if you ever want to poke around there

I'm not sure where you guys live but if i was paying for a new asphalt or CONCRETE driveway, i wouldn't want rip rap installed under it.

Rip Rap is not the rock, but the varying size of the rocks. ANY rock can be sized as Rip Rap

Thx guys ibe gotten rocks from patio supplie stores before. This stuff was right outside and looks black when wet, being lazy lol gonna test with some vinegar later on.

What is it that the vinegar picks up that makes it foam ?
