Thinking of getting some wild caught Geophagus Winemilleri, but the PH in the tank I plan to keep them in is 8 (I have to keep it that way, my paratheraps breidohri get this odd fungus otherwise)
While I believe that most cichlids are hearty fish and could adapt to a wide range of pHs, I can't say that it is optimal. My water if pH 7.4 and pretty hard. I've just come to accept that I only keep fish that will do well in my water.
Wild fish react to PH differences much more than captive bred. I'm sure if you can acclimate the fish slowly to your PH it will do fine. In this case the "drop and plop" method isn't a good idea. Do some research and see what PH the fish naturally comes from.
In most cases, a PH difference isn't usually a problem compare to total dissolved solids ( TDS) but a diffrence in PH of 1.5-2.0 can be harmful to fish if not acclimated correctly.
