So I posted a thing about treating ich with salt and people said I wasn't adding enough, so I started adding more but now my angelfish are up at the top breathing heavily, so I just want to make sure I am not going to kill the angels. I have basically added around 45 tsp, so I need to add another 45 tsp right? What about just so I can be completely sure what should the specific gravity be in the tank. Right now it is 1.008 and our tap water is 1.004. Please help

Thanks

You don't even need salt at all. Just heat can kill Ich. I have killed Ich twice with just heat. If you turn the temp to 86F it will speed up the lifestyle of the parasite, turn it to 87F and it kills them and stops reproduction. Don't worry about the heat the Angels can handle it. But I would also add an air stone for more oxygen. Adding more oxygen is a good idea regardless. Anyway good luck

Salt + heat. Turn the heat up to 88degrees. Add 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of water. Read the stickies. They all recommend that you use salt because 1, the salt helps your fish regenerate its slimecoat so it doesn't get infected again, and 2, salt kills ich. Don't go with just either or. Go with both.

Also, salt shouldn't make your fish grasp for breath at the top of the surface. Are you sure its ich? How big is your tank anyway?

It's true salt does help a lot but it can be done with just heat alone. If you are confident your fish can handle the salt go with the salt. Some fish are way too sensitive to salt and plants also don't like salt either. Since I have been in this bind before I used the heat method and it has worked for me twice. I am not saying anything negative about the salt, but I would just ease into it and add little amounts of it over the course of a few days if you are worried about it being harmful to your fish. Also make sure you are using the right salt too.

Whoah Whoah, but Angels are a bit more delicate when it comes to cichlids I think (never owned one). I know they like low pH so I think adding salt would not be a good thing. Just use the Ich med and up the temp to hurry Ich lifecycle.

Angels aren't that delicate. Plus adding salt does nothing to alter the ph. Ich medication doesn't always work.. its better to just use heat and salt..

Mmmmmm, sound like a nice soup....dont forget a bit of MSG and dabble of Fish Sauce.

LOL, speaking of which...Can Fish Sauce be used instead of salt?
