What tank would you say would have more room for a fish does the volume or the area of the bottom make the most difference? The sizes of the tanks are just some thing i came up with for a comparison spent about a min thinking about them if you think different sizes would be better to compare just let me know. I'll make a new pic for every one. I am thinking about this in the sense of a river fish, if it makes any difference? I'm not around a lot of fish but i think a fish spends most of its time when just swimming around not feeding or anything swimming at a angle close to horizontal than at a sharper angle??

A larger surface area means more oxygen can get into the water. As long as the tank isn't too narrow for the fish to turn around, I would go with the longer tank with more surface area.

Many things to consider. First the footprint is most important for swimming room, a good balance between width and length is needed, but also will depend on type of fish stocked.

Height will be of more importance once you decide on what fish you are keeping. Large communities need good separation for bottom, mid and top dwelling species or even the largest of footprints will become crowded. You may also keep large fish that become vertical to feed off the bottom or the surface of the water, a shallow tank may cause for unneeded stress during feedings.

Other factors may include plants or decor and placement of the tank in your house or office. So, the more planning that you can do, the better chance you'll make the right choice in tank dimensions.
